Just before Christmas, we received an urgent call about a donkey stallion, Walter and a Cob gelding, Rio. The pair had been living together for several years and desperately needed help. Without hesitation, we stepped in.
As we all know, there is no rest for rescues, even over the Christmas period.
On arrival, we discovered that Walter was entire. In line with the National Equine Welfare Council’s guidance and responsible ownership, we do not encourage breeding of horses, donkeys, or mules at Hope Pastures, so Walter was admitted to Rainbow Equine Hospital for castration.
Sadly, things have not been straightforward for this gentle donkey. Following further examinations, Walter developed complications that have required ongoing veterinary treatment, multiple follow-up visits and intensive monitoring. He now needs extra staff time and specialised care to give him the best possible chance of recovery.
We are doing everything possible to support Walter through this, but his care is ongoing, and the veterinary costs continue to rise.
This was an unexpected intake at an already difficult time of year, and we are now asking for help to support Walter’s treatment and recovery. Any donation, no matter how small, will make a real difference and help us continue giving him the care he needs.
