Bluebell

(Hope) Bluebell

Born at Hope Pastures June 2008

Re-homed October 2009

Bluebell arrived at Hope Pastures before she was even born, her mum Humbug was rescued as part of a RSPCA cruelty case where many ponies were found dead. Luckily Humbug was rescued just in time, she was severely emaciated and needed to be held in a sling to support her weight. It’s amazing that her (and Bluebell) survived. On June 17th 2007 Bluebell was born, she was Hope Pastures first foal, and the last foal to be born on site for 27 years! We were very happy and proud to have her at the Sanctuary.
Bluebell was a very entertaining and independent foal, she only seemed to need her mum for milk and entertained herself for the rest of the time. She loved people and would gallop over when she was called. For a foal she was very well mannered and would lift all of her little hooves before long.
In October 2009 Bluebell moved to her new home where she went to keep two other Shetlands company. As we didn’t want to take her away  from her mum too abruptly we asked her new carers to temporarily take Humbug for a week or so and they kindly agreed, which worked well with the least trauma possible caused to mum and daughter.

A week after Humbug came back to Hope Pastures and thankfully both her and Hope seemed not to miss one another or become distressed.
When Bluebell was old enough her new home intended to train her to become a ridden children’s pony however she was seen to be developing a deformed back and so was not fit to use for riding, only as a companion. Although this does not cause her any discomfort she would never be able to carry a saddle and rider, so the home she was in had to re-consider keeping her as she was wanted to be used as a riding pony eventually for a young boy.
Fortunately a lady was looking for a small companion for her mare who was easily bullied, and came to meet Bluebell to see if she would make a good friend for her horse Pixie.
The lady liked Bluebell and so she went to be a companion for Pixie in January 2011 and they are getting along great, we recently paid her a visit and were really pleased to see her happy and settled, she is so well cared for with her own little stable next to her friend, and plenty of space to run around. As we left to say goodbye to her, both mares were frolicking and playing together which was lovely to see.
