Job Description

Hope Pastures rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes horses, ponies and donkeys.  Based in Leeds and open free of charge every day, we’re also a centre for the community – a place where people, irrespective of background and ability, can meet the animals, volunteer and learn how to contribute to the community.

A small charity with a highly committed team of volunteers, trustees and staff, we have few overheads and currently 95p of every £1 donated to us is spent directly on the animals.

37.5 hours a week comprising Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday.


Hourly rate

Under 25 yrs old   £7.38

Over 25 yrs old £7.83


Purpose of Role

Assist the Yard Manager to ensure all Hope Pastures on site equines are given the highest quality of care.

Maintain a clean and safe environment for equines, staff, volunteers and visitors to the Sanctuary.

Provide a welcome for visitors, giving them information and ensuring they behave in an appropriate manner in the proximity of our residents.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Feed, muck out and bed down equines on a daily basis.

Groom, exercise and train equines as directed, reporting to the Yard Manager any signs of distress, discomfort or disease.

Build and sustain good working relationships between staff and volunteers, including supporting the volunteers who run events on site such as Pony Days and children’s birthday parties.

Ensure all visitors are made to feel welcome and given sufficient information, or directed to information points, to make their visit as enjoyable as possible as these are often the people who support the Sanctuary financially or may do in the future.

When required, assist the Yard Manager with visiting professionals such as vet, dentist, farrier, physio, nutritionist etc.

Occasionally help care for our equines off site, or accompany another staff member in the horse box when transporting equines or equipment.


Essential Skills, Experience and Competencies

  • Experience of working with equines and ideally equines with behavioural problems or health issues
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a small team
  • Good communication skills
  • Honest, discreet and trustworthy
  • Full driving licence and an ability to drive our 3 ton horsebox would be an advantage

The role will be mainly based at Hope Pastures main site.

Working hours will require a degree of flexibility to meet the Sanctuary’s needs.
