Zak  (1971-2011)
We lost our dear old horse Zak after many months of struggling to help
him cope with his arthritis.
Zak was put to sleep and went very quietly surrounded by people who loved
him, and having spent the day in the sunshine with Lady and his other
friends.
Zak was quite a legend at Hope Pastures as he was so emaciated on arrival
and we thought he didn’t have long to live, he proved everyone wrong
though and had 5 happy years with us. He managed remarkably well for a 40
year old horse, he had a lovely spirit and still to his last days he had
an attitude, and wasn't scared to let staff know when he wasn't happy,
especially he hated having his rug changed and would bite at us to tell
us off!
Zak had many, many human friends who supported him and fundraised for his
rehabilitation, people who donated good warm rugs and who came almost
daily to feed him carrots and give him a good scratch and fuss when he
was first rescued. Without this amount of love and care we are sure Zak
may not have pulled through.
Zak has left behind his girlfriend, Lady who seems lost without him. Lady
had been tethered for many years and so did not know how to protect
herself against other horses, but once Zak befriended her she no longer
had any need to be afraid as he would protect her. We really hope that
Lady will manage without Zak , happily Bronte seems to be looking after
her so far.
Zak will be so sadly missed and the sanctuary already seems so empty
without him, he was a great character and will not be forgotten.
