Sugar had a visit from the vet to have her eyes checked as her sight seems
to have deteriorated over the past year or so. She has to be brought down
into her stable for this as her eyes must be examined with a special torch
in dark conditions. She behaved very well for this even though she worries
when she's brought away from her friends in the field.
The vet looked at both of Sugar's eyes and we were pleased to hear that her
eyes have not deteriorated so much as we thought and we will not have to
look at separating her from the big horses field in the near future.
We are contacting other sanctuaries who keep equines with near or complete
blindness to gather advice about providing special padding around Sugar's
stable and to prepare for any other special care in the future, as her
cataracts which are causing her blindness unfortunately will gradually get
worse and are untreatable.
We all love Sugar very much and will do our best to ensure she stays safe
and happy for as long as she is here. Paddy is a good help as he will 'hang
around' with her and is often seen grooming her in the field.April 05
Sugar is doing very well and is in fabulous condition.
She is losing her winter coat very fast and sometimes it seem no matter how
much we groom her there are still handfuls of fur coming out the next day!
We are giving Sugar extra attention as she is struggling with her sight and
her hearing. Although most of the time she is content and happy, she does
sometimes lose sight of her best friend Molly and become worried, but she
always finds her again in the end.
Sugar had her hooves trimmed at the beginning of the month and was very well
behaved, her hooves grow at a funny angle as she has arthritis so its
important that we keep them properly trimmed and balanced.
